It’s Time ISU Football, You Need Some New Uniforms

Andy Olson – Indy Writer

Dear Illinois State football,

Where do I even begin with you? You’ve brought me so much joy and so much heartbreak over the past two seasons. Every Saturday is exciting thanks to you. I’m sure I speak for everyone on campus when I say that I don’t want you going anywhere anytime soon.

I wish we could meet more than one season out of the year, but so goes the game. This past season was one of your best yet, and the year before that was possibly the best in our history.

I’m not writing this letter because I’m disappointed in your performance. It has nothing to do with that! You’re doing everything you can to win and all the students really appreciate it.

I’m writing to you today for a different reason. I wish things could have kept going on without any issues but I just can’t stand idly by when you’re doing this to yourself. It’s really hard to tell a friend something like this so I’m just going to come out and say it…

You look boring.

Please don’t get angry! I’m really not trying to hurt you when I say this. I’m trying to do what’s best for all of us.

Look at your brother basketball. Here at Illinois State we have our own font built right into our primary logo and they use it perfectly by scrawling it above and below their number. Sister basketball took it a step further and adapted the font for their actual numbers!

All that is great, but I’m not even asking for that much. The current jerseys have only two colors: red and white. Red jerseys and pants with white numbers and lettering at home and the inverse of that for away jerseys.

And that’s it.

Some call it classic, others call it timeless. I call it dry.

There is currently only one team in all of college football that can get away with a two color jersey and make it look right, and that’s the team currently on top. The Alabama Crimson Tide have been rocking the same two-tone, no nonsense, double striped pants look since 1952. Now that’s classic.

Your current look was adopted in 2011, which doesn’t necessarily qualify it as classic.

You matter to me a lot football, so you have to understand all this criticism comes from a close friend and it’s to make you better.

Look, I’m not saying we need to blow everything up and restart. Your red and white look is really classy, but it’s not enough.

All you have to do is add a third color in there somewhere. Maybe some black to outline the numbers? Or maybe even some kind of stripe design on the sleeves?

How about a third jersey, or even a new helmet color? I think a nice matte finish on your current helmet could really spice things up.

I know you HATE University of Illinois football but you have to admit, the team dresses well. Take some pointers from them. Their rebrand really brightened up their look and even if you have resentment towards them, they know how to dress on Gameday.

You can do this ISU football. Even the slightest of changes would be appreciated it. Just know that you don’t have to live like this if you don’t want to.

Well I hope we can still be friends after this. I truly do love you and I don’t want to see you upset. I’ll give you some time to think. I’ll just hang out with Basketball and Baseball for a while.

Just give it some thought. I’ll see you next fall, friend.

Love, Andy
